Song: "Woz"
One of the all-time JJ classics.
Background
I watched a video of Steve Wozniak a few years back (back in 2023) and was immediately inspired to write this song. It’s one of my favorite songs, and means a lot to me, even to this day.
Steve Wozniak, of course, just loved to play around with computers. Steve Jobs was great at selling them. This song is about earning your Woz, which means loving your ideas and your friends enough to build what you want to build, and giving your best ideas to your friends because you trust them to build a better world together with you.
I guess I can put in the chords and maybe add a recording later.
Lyrics
I guess I've put on my suit and tie
So I should shake your hands and smile
I like the view out of the window
And this lumbar support
You've got the benefits
The perks in the offices
I'll cut it short
I decline,
Yeah I'm really sure
Thank you for the offer,
Miss, Ma'am, Sir, but
I don't want or need your job,
I just need Woz
That I can find within myself and somehow unlock
That childhood joy of making something with your hands
And when you find a dream your friends can share
You water it with sweat and let it grow
Into the most wonderful fruit they'll ever taste
Yeah, you heard me clear:
I'd rather earn my Woz than score your job
I'd rather build the world's first fire than be its morning star
I'd rather carve the Sphinx with my own fingernails
Than lie forever under Giza's peaks
But that's just me
I'd rather tame a horse than fly a car
I'd rather draw the wings for Pegasus
That get a hand-me-down spaceship
And I would burn the books for every last guitar
To learn the theory of the strings from stratch
And write a song that will outlast
My voice
My face
My words
Leaving just a melody that lifts you up and lets you down
Like dust dancing in wind
I don't want or need your job,
I just need Woz
That I can find within myself and somehow unlock
That childhood joy of making something with your hands
And when you find a friend to spread your dreams,
You gift to him your plants so they can grow
For that, I'd let the garden go.
I'll sow the tree,
You own the world.
